| Major Carriers including Lufthansa, Eritrean Airlines, Egypt Air, Yemenia, Saudi
Airlines and NAS Air conduct regularly scheduled flights from and to Asmara
International Airport. The newly established, State-of-the-Art, Massawa International Airport which is located about 120KMs (80 Miles) Northeast of Asmara, will soon begin serving a wider carrier pool with more diverse schedule. The ports of Massawa and Assab remain the primary docking points for voyagers entering Eritrea from the Middle East and other parts of Asia.
Prior clearance is required of all seaport entering cruise ships and other
Freight entities. Such clearances could be obtained from the respective
officials.
For visitors residing in the Sudan and Djibouti, the most extensively
used port
of entries are the Eritrean-Sudanese and the Eritrean-Djibouti
State-lines,
which are quite accessible through ground transportation.
Upon arrival, one could make use of the several regularly scheduled
domestic
flights to travel between all Eritrea’s major cities. Most visitors
however
prefer hiring private taxi services or making use of other forms of
local
transportation facilities to get around. Rental cars are widely
available, and
driving in Eritrea is a safe and enjoyable exercise. Asmara’s
accessibility and
its year-round pleasant weather makes joining the large number of local
bicyclers particularly attractive. Ground transportation using shared
locomotives in most major cities is quite reasonably priced (around
0.33 USD/
leg). Soon after one is accustomed to Eritrea’s local culture, which
often
takes less than a week, walking under the lined palm trees of pleasant
Asmara
becomes the most preferred mode of transportation for several visitors.
